What is required in a letter of application?

  1. Addresses
  2. Date
  3. Headline
  4. salutation
  5. sentence of introduction to the l.o.a.
  6. „The letter“
  7. asking for feedback
  8. valediction
  9. Signature

1. Adresses

First: You:

First name and last name and address, usually with phone-number and emailadress:

Max Mustermann
Superstr. 123
12345 Riesenstadt

Second: The recipient

XYZ Company
Liv Tyler
Megastr. 321
54321 City
Phone: 0987 / 654321

2. Date

Tell the date, using the English writing: 4th June 2017 or June 13, 2017

3. Headline

Write: „Application for the job as …“ (whatever is offered)

4. Salutation

Be kind and write:

  • Dear Mr Tyler / Mrs Tyler / Ms Tyler
  • Dear Sir or Madam (if you don’t know the name)

5. Sentence of introduction

Tell them why you write that letter. For example:

  • I am interested in working for your company as …
  • I read your advertisement and would like to apply for …
  • I would like to apply for the job as …
  • I am writing to apply for the job as …

6. The letter

  1. Introduce yourself:
    1. What is your name?
    2. How old are you?
    3. Which school do you visit?
    4. When are you going to leave school?
  2. Tell them why you would like to do the job:
    1. Do you want to work with people from other countries?
    2. Do you want to join a company from a different country?
    3. Do you want to improve your English?
  3. Tell them about your qualifications and experiences:
    1. „I have been working as a football coach“
    2. „I can work under pressure“
    3. „I can speak English and German“
    4. „I have been learning English for X years.“
    5. „I have had experiences working at …“

7. Asking for feedback

You would like to hear from them, don’t you? So write:

  • I look forward to hearing from you.
  • I hope to hear from you soon.
  • Please let me know soon.
  • I am open for an interview at any time.

8. Valediction

Say „Goodbye“ the formal and polite way:

„yours sincerely“

9. Signature

Sign it – that’s it.
